An initiative in cooperation with the local community to light the streetlights of the city in collaboration with MEDCO
Aiming to relight a total of 200 streets out of 1,350 streets and 10 avenues out of 20 avenues in phase 1.
“Let’s Light Up Our Community” under the slogan “A Spark in the Dark” is the flagship initiative by Rebirth Beirut, whereby the association is illuminating the streets of Beirut – streets that had been shrouded in darkness for the past 15 months. This initiative has had a noticeable change in the capital’s nightly cityscape and is worth your interest because it tells of a concrete improvement in the urban quality of living.
The initiative restored the life to over 50 main streets in Beirut where a lot of businesses and nightlife spots had become empty and abandoned due to extended power outages. These power cuts, a symptom of Lebanon’s severe economic troubles, have left many areas without functioning electricity, especially at night. The periods of extended darkness have led to an increase in crime and forced many businesses that previously remained open until the early morning hours to close, reducing once lively areas to deserted spaces.
Rebirth Beirut devised a simple solution to lights the streets whereby people from the neighborhood contribute power from their generators and get a discount from the fuel provider MEDCO.
